What is the ZnO?


Zinc oxide, though it is found naturally as a mineral, zincite, the vast majority is produced synthetically. It is a white powder and its whiteness is due to their degree of purity, since if it has impurities varies its colouring.

ZnO has a bitter taste. It absorbs the carbon dioxide from the air, it has a higher absorption in the UV spectrum as any pigment. It is not combustible.

What´s the ZnO?

Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound with the formula ZnO. ZnO is commonly used as an additive in various materials and products, for example: rubbers, plastics, ceramics, galvanized steel, glasses, cements, lubricants, paints, pharmacy, adhesives, sealants, pigments, food, creams, other... It is an activator and an Accelerator for many products.

A versatile compound

is a powder that is slightly soluble in water, not soluble in alcohol, but solubilizes very well in the majority of acids and alkalis. It is non-toxic. It is thermochromic and is stable at room temperature. It has very particular mechanical and electrical properties that allow you to have a wide range of applications.

How to obtain ZnO?

In ZINCTIMAL we use the following raw materials to get a ZnO of high purity and performance:

At ZINCTIMAL we produce zinc oxide, mostly, by the French, or indirect method where zinc is melted in a crucible until it evaporates and reacts with oxygen from the air to form zinc oxide. Then cooled and packaged.

Another method is the direct or American, where the ZnO is obtained by heating zinc compounds with a coal additive to reduce gaseous zinc.) . It is then oxidized by the French method.

Depending on the manufacturing process, of the purity, of the size of the particles, between properties, zinc oxide can be for different applications.

Applications of ZnO


Is one of the main uses of zinc oxide. ZnO is an excellent activator in rubber compounds, so that the organic accelerators can deploy all their activity during vulcanization. Also adds resistance for rubber compounds, improves the heat, and abrasion resistance and helps to protect against degradation by UV ultraviolet. Applications in: tires, artificial turf, soils...


The use of ZnO ceramics is very varied:

  • It increases the heat capacity of the mixture.
  • It provides a measure of electrical conductivity.
  • It extends the range of temperature so that the composition is stable.
  • Maintains low thermal expansion.
  • Controls the viscosity.
  • Prevents cracks appear in severe cooking.
  • Increases whiteness, brightness and finishing enamels by regulating surface.
  • In decorative tiles, we increase the brightness of glazes and colors.
  • Improvement of chemical resistance.
  • Uses: floorings, coverings, sanitary, washbasins...

ZnO in optical crystals and glasses joins formulations to achieve a lower range of cooking and other functions. Applications: optical crystals, glasses, containers...

Pigments and paints

ZnO is a basic element in all pigment, paint or enamel, especially as a component of anti-corrosive and anti-stain paints. Properties fungicide / bactericides from Zinc oxide make it an indispensable part in formulations of paintings that enhance color and durability under different climatic conditions. Uses: pigments, enamels, paints...

Metallurgical industry

Due to the High solubility of this compound in alcohol and acids, it is an essential part in the process of manufacturing coins, mirrors and metal parts. It allows the alloys of other materials and is an excellent vehicle for galvanizing and coating of iron and steel parts to avoid rust.

Other applications

Zno is also used in: lubricant additives, adhesives, batteries and electronic components. On qualities of purity, used in skin creams, toothpastes, deodorants and others.
