Zinc oxide is one of the most promising materials in the field of electronics, by having excellent optical properties in the ultraviolet. It could replace laser-emitting diodes (LED) visible light, such as gallium arsenide. Additionally, Zn oxide can act as a substrate in heteroepitaxy (of GaN for example). Among the features that have led the zinc oxide to be used in electronics they noteworthy are: * It has direct gap at room temperature. * High electrical conductivity. * High optical transmission in the visible and high reflectance in infrared. * Good thermal and chemical stability.


Zinc oxide has a great technological interest in low dimensionality structures. Multiple nanostructures in the form of nanoparticles, nano wires, nano fibres can be... Scientists at the University of Karlsruhe have manufactured nano rods of this material that emit light, they can be used on projects and devices that need nano lasers in ultraviolet, is of short wavelength.
